The ever popular "What do you do with them?" question:
Llama Shows: Young and old alike come together for friendly competition to be awarded for the breeding, training and handling of these intelligent animals. Competition choices include halter, pack, cart, obstacle, and the always popular costume class.
Pack Llamas: Since their soft padded feet may actually damage the trail less than the average hiker, llamas are often welcomed where other pack animals are not. Though they carry less weight (a percentage of the llama's total body weight) than a pack mule or horse, their ability to go wherever you may want to lead them is unequaled.
Carts and Driving: Cart Driving is probably the most difficult of the skills asked of a llama, but also one of the most rewarding and fun when it has been perfected. The equipment used should be specially designed for llamas.
Fiber: One of the most prized by-products of llamas is their fiber. Llamas can be shorn annually or bi-annually, depending upon the growth rate of the llama's fiber and preferences of the owner.
Pet Therapy: Llamas are being used successfully with elderly and handicapped persons. Nursing homes are delighted when llamas are brought for a visit. Llamas make good therapy animals because they are intuitive and curious with new people and surroundings. They seem to sense the needs of others and are giving and gentle animals.
Guard Llamas: Llamas can provide an effective, long-term and economical alternative for predator control in a variety of farm and ranch conditions. They will, however, still require the same attention to health and nutritional needs as any other llama.
Potpourri: Golf caddy, fishing buddy (get all that gear to your favorite fishing hole with a minimum of effort), walking companion (keeps you and your llama in tip top shape), relaxation therapy (turn off the TV and head for the pasture). These majestic animals can improve your mood considerably with their antics. From dust baths, humming (they don't know the words), pronking (bouncing around with all 4 feet off the ground simultaneously) to the occasional kiss. These wonderful animals will change your life for the better!
